Maria joined GRID-Arendal in December of 2016 to provide support to the Ecosystems, Economics and Sustainable Development Programme. She holds a PhD in Seagrass Ecology from Edinburgh Napier University. Her PhD focussed on the ecological roles of seagrasses in controlling coastal erosion and in trapping and storing carbon, topics of urgent importance in the face of climate change and the enormous worldwide pressure on marine ecosystems. Maria has worked on seagrasses since 2008 in a number of projects in the Mediterranean (Greece and Spain), UK, Kenya, Tanzania and Saudi Arabia. She was a member of COST Action ES0906, a European network of seagrass researchers, from 2010 to 2015, which awarded her twice a ‘Short-term Scientific Mission’ grant and has been co-ordinating a network of scientists based across the globe to measure and understand sedimentation processes since 2014.
She holds a MSc in Freshwater and Coastal Sciences, University of London, UK and BSc (Hons) in Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
